Sun Protection for Children

We are all extra happy and excited for S U M M E R…

But don’t forget about Sun Protection!

Mineral-based sunscreens are among the best options for kids. Rather than getting absorbed into the skin, mineral products stay on the skin’s surface and physically deflect the sun’s harmful rays. You may not be able to “rub it in all the way”, as they tend to leave a residue behind, and this is NORMAL. Mineral sunscreens are also more gentle on sensitive skin. They contain safe products approved by FDA, like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide molecules.

Choose a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30-50. Ensure it doesn't solely consist of titanium dioxide, as this ingredient alone does NOT filter out all UVA rays like zinc oxide does. A combination of the two, or zinc oxide alone, is preferable. There's no need to go beyond an SPF of 50.

Avoid eye contact, sunscreen that gets sprayed or leaks into the eyes can be very irritating and painful.

It is recommended to apply sunscreen 30-60 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply every 2 hours (or more frequently if playing in the water or sweating). Dry the area off to reapply, and make sure it fully dries before they return to the water or their activity. This is a great break time for snacks or hydration!

While sunscreen SPRAY is convenient to apply, LOTIONS are easier to apply properly. If you do use a spray, hold the nozzle about an inch from the skin and then use your hand rub it in to evenly.

For your infant, dress them in lightweight long sleeves, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. Use tents or seek shade when possible. Push fluids so they stay hydrated, and use fans to make sure they do not get overheated!
